Reserva de la Biosfera El Pinacate y Gran Desierto de Altar
Los Norteños, Sonora, Mexico
17 July, 2017
Ranked number 4 of Mexico’s top 13 natural marvels, the El Pinacate y Gran Desierto de Altar Biosphere Reserve was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013. Littered with maar craters and volcanic rocks, its lunar landscapes are so unique that NASA trained its astronauts for the moon landing at El Pinacate back in the 1960s and 70s. The reserve sits just 50 kilometers south of Lukeville, Arizona and its sister park, Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, and just 40 kilometers north of Puerto Penasco. If you have any remote interest in geology, a stop at El Pinacate should be on your bucket list.
