In 2026, it's hard to escape the topics of deportation and occupation, so I've come to Saint Malo to face them head-on. During Le Grand Dérangement, many of the Acadian deportees and refugees landed here, most just thankful to be alive after surviving horrific conditions aboard the British deportation ships. But the history of great derangements here runs so much deeper than just the Acadian plight. During World War II, Saint Malo found itself caught in the crosshairs of a vicious power struggle between good and evil. Throughout the brutal five-year Nazi occupation, the city turned into absolute hell on earth. Trapped residents faced endless starvation, abject poverty, as well as untold intimidation and violence. Against all odds, La Résistance found a way to thrive, delivering critical intelligence directly to the Allies from within the sealed occupied zone. By the time Allied forces wrested Saint Malo back from Nazi grasp, over 85% of the city had been destroyed. But through hope, unity, and perseverance, Saint Malo had its freedom and liberty back.
