Massive Haboob Swallows Nearly 1/4 of Arizona
Gila Bend, Arizona, United States
9 July, 2018
After a relaxing morning at Quitobaquito, the summer monsoon kicked into full swing, as I chased two dust storms and a line of severe thunderstorms from Mexico all the way back to Phoenix. We caught our first dust storm just north of the town of Why as it came out of Mexico, but the highlight of the day was a massive haboob just north of Gila Bend (seen at the end of the album), which started east of Phoenix and was so powerful it made it all the way to Yuma and beyond. There are some spectacular images out on the internet of this haboob along Interstate 8 as it swallowed much of the southwestern quadrant of Arizona. Read the full adventure.
