Oregon Trail: The Guernsey Ruts
Guernsey, Wyoming, United States
1 March, 2022
Carved directly into rugged sandstone, the Guernsey Ruts are some of, if not the most well-preserved ruts on the entire Oregon Trail. Jagged rocky terrain forced all westbound wagon trains to funnel through one passable cut in the hill south of the town of Guernsey, creating the impressive ruts you see today. A powerful testament to the effects of time, the five-foot deep chasm you see in the pictures would not exist today without the Oregon Trail. You can find the ruts a short distance from Interstate 25, about half way between Casper and Cheyenne.
